The Coast Guard’s new maritime cybersecurity rule is more than just another compliance box to check. It’s a response to the growing wave of cyber incidents targeting vessels, terminals, and supporting infrastructure worldwide. Maritime operations rely on interconnected systems for navigation, cargo management, and communication. A single cyber breach can jeopardize safety, disrupt commerce, and create cascading effects across the supply chain.
Recognizing these risks, the Coast Guard has issued its Final Rule on maritime cybersecurity, effective July 16, 2025. By January 12, 2026, every vessel and MTSA-regulated facility must show compliance with 33 CFR §101.650. This includes training all personnel in cybersecurity awareness and reporting, and ensuring Key Personnel are prepared to lead incident response.

Together, these two programs build a complete training pipeline:
Awareness → Reporting → Response.
Maritime Cybersecurity Awareness
This foundational program introduces all maritime personnel to today’s most common cyber threats and the steps needed to reduce risk. Using real-world scenarios, learners practice spotting phishing attempts, handling suspicious devices, and recognizing abnormal system behavior.
Who it’s for: All vessel and facility personnel
Regulatory coverage: Meets 33 CFR §101.650(d)(1)(i–v) requirements for training on threat recognition, incident detection, attacker techniques, and incident reporting procedures.
Cybersecurity Incident Response for Maritime Key Personnel
Key Personnel play a central role when a cyber incident occurs. This program prepares officers, supervisors, and managers to act decisively without overstepping technical boundaries. Learners practice incident communication, evidence preservation, and coordination with the CySO, ensuring compliance with 33 CFR requirements and organizational Cybersecurity Plans.
Who it’s for: Officers, supervisors, and other designated Key Personnel
Regulatory coverage: Fulfills 33 CFR §101.650(d)(2) training for Key Personnel, covering roles, responsibilities, incident response procedures, and maintaining current knowledge of evolving threats.
