What Is Hydrogen Sulfide?
If you work in the oil and gas or petrochemical industries, then you know that there are many serious health and safety risks associated with both onshore and offshore worksites. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a colorless, flammable gas that’s commonly found in oil and gas drilling and refining sites as well as petroleum production and refining sites. Agricultural, sanitation, and other workers are also at risk. Due to the short-term and long-term harm H2S could cause workers, it is imperative these workplaces provide hydrogen sulfide training to employees and contractors.
Hydrogen sulfide is extremely toxic at relatively low concentrations, and it is potentially lethal, depending on the duration and frequency of exposure. At low concentrations, the gas may smell like rotten eggs, and it can cause eye and throat irritation, nausea, headaches, loss of appetite, insomnia, and other telltale symptoms. In high enough concentrations, respiratory arrest can occur after just one breath. Because it cannot be detected by smell at high concentrations, it goes without saying that H2S is the silent killer of the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries.
Hydrogen Sulfide Training with Moxie Media
When it comes to H2S safety training, you can’t afford to put your workforce at risk. With Moxie Media’s hydrogen sulfide safety training video, you and your team will learn the ins and outs of proper hydrogen sulfide training.
Part of our Oilfield Safety series, Moxie’s hydrogen sulfide training video covers a broad range of topics, including:
- H2S awareness
- The properties and characteristics of H2S
- Working safely with H2S
- Explosion and fire prevention
- Creating and executing contingency plans
- Proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Detection equipment and techniques
- And many other workplace H2S safety guidelines, procedures, practices, and standards
Not only is hydrogen sulfide a significant threat to your workforce’s health, but also it is known to damage certain metals, such as iron. After significant H2S exposure, heavy machinery or other tools can fail catastrophically. When your workforce is prepared with the proper hydrogen sulfide training, employees can better protect themselves, the equipment, and your facilities.
