What is Stress?
Stress is a body’s natural physical response to a challenging or threatening situation. And while some amount of stress can sometimes be a good thing for certain kinds of tasks, too much stress is pretty much always harmful.
An excess amount of stress isn’t just an obstacle to performance, it can also cause problems with health and wellbeing.
For example, too much stress can cause problems such as headache, stomach ache, sleep disturbances, a short temper, and difficulty concentrating.
Our stress response happens when our brains recognize a threat. A stressors can be any situation that causes us to feel stressed. Stressors can be environmental, like extreme cold or heat. Other stressors may be the result of an illness to something emotionally or psychologically difficult like a relationship problem or a conflict with a coworker.
Identifying Triggers and Managing Stress
To best combat our stressors, we need to learn about all types of stress and how to fight them.
If you know what situations cause you the most stress, it’s easier to develop strategies to respond to them. So tracking the stressors that trigger your stress is a good first step. What makes you feel angry, worried, anxious, or annoyed? Do you often get headaches or a stomach ache for no obvious reason?
