Maritime Employees are at a High Risk of Suffering Back & Soft Tissue Injuries
Maritime work can be more hazardous than most land-based occupations and crewmembers are more likely to find themselves in situations where they are at risk of injury.
Years of prolonged, awkward postures and poor body mechanics can create unnecessary stress on muscle, bones, discs, and joints.
Additionally, poor lifestyle habits can lead to a variety of problems including early deterioration of bone, muscle, ligaments, and spinal discs, along with conditions like stress, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
But you can prevent back and soft tissue injuries by learning the right ways to take care of your body, and by working smarter—not harder.
Ergonomic Rules For Safe Maritime Work Practices
The back is designed to work best in certain “neutral positions” that, when ignored, may lead to excessive stress and discomfort along the spine.
The key to working comfortably is learning how to employ the correct work position for each work task.
There are three basic guidelines that, when followed, help reduce unnecessary stress on our muscle, bones, discs, and joints. These techniques can help prevent damage to your spine. You will also improve the overall health and quality of your life.
Whenever possible practice proper body positioning. Once you start a job, remain aware of your body position during the work and what you can do to change uncomfortable conditions.
The second rule is to utilize body stabilization techniques. The goal is to look for ways to support the upper body by taking pressure off the discs as we bend over.
Finally, it is important that you practice posture relief exercises when you work in awkward, bent over positions for an extended period.
Periodically stop and perform some stretching and posture relief exercises to help reduce stress and nurture the discs and soft tissue of your body.
Continuing to work until something hurts, or exhaustion sets in can damage your back and soft tissue.
Nutrition, Stretching, and Strength Building
The use of good body mechanics and exercises to maintain physical fitness should not be practiced just at work. It is equally important off the job.
That is why it is recommended to practice stretching and strengthening exercises at home as well. These exercises go a long way towards increasing body flexibility and improving nutrition to spinal discs and bone joints.
Also, you need to become more educated about what you eat and how you eat. Reducing overall calories, avoiding processed foods, cutting down on sugary drinks and other forms of sweets are all good dietary habits
Eating a proper diet combined with a few minutes of exercise a day will make a huge difference in your overall wellbeing.
