46 CFR Subchapter M minimally requires that every vessel undergo annual audits and periodic drydock inspections. The Towing Safety Management System, or TSMS, and its implementation must also be periodically audited. The annual vessel audits may be conducted by trained company personnel or a Third Party Organization, referred to as a TPO. An initial audit of the TSMS and follow-up audits must be conducted by an independent Third Party Organization or the USCG.
