The X-904: Safe Personnel Transfer Training
Transferring personnel between offshore installations and vessels is an essential procedure in the oil and gas and maritime industries. The X-904 personnel basket remains the safest way to transport a sizeable group of people between offshore installations and vessels.
This course trains workers on the best practices required when conducting personnel transfers using the X-904 transfer device. Upon completion of this training, viewers are able to:
- Recognize all equipment used in a personnel basket
- Describe a personnel lift plan and JSA
- Know the basics of crane operations during lifting
- Identify all safe personnel riding procedures
- Know emergency transfer procedures
- Recognize all safe operating and transfer procedures
What is the X-904 Transfer Basket?
The X-904 provides extra protection from impacts and increased stability on deck and during transfer, due to its rigid construction.
The tightened stainless steel ropes protect riders from any side impact that may occur. All models are equipped with quick release safety lanyards and shock absorbing “feet” protect passengers from hard landing.
The X-904 provides a designated area for luggage. And in the event of an emergency situation, the four, six, and eight person X-904s allows for a stretcher to be loaded.
While the X-904 was designed with safety in mind, you still need to do your part to ensure safe operations.
Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility
All qualified personnel should discuss and analyze the job and contribute to a sound job hazard analysis and lifting plan.
The crane operator is responsible for making sure that the crane is approved for personnel transfers and for inspecting all of its components thoroughly, as per API RP 2D. In short, the X-904 should be lifted and lowered with care and kept under control at all times.
The vessel captain also plays an essential part in transfer operations. Most importantly, the captain must ensure that the vessel is properly positioned and that there is a clear deck area large enough for the X-904 to land on.
Passengers also contribute to the safety of personnel transfers. Above all, it is important to remember that this is serious business. Horseplay is not permitted as it can get you, or someone else, hurt or killed.
